We hiked up Volcán Chicabal (locally known as Laguna de Chicabal), then descended 780 steep steps down into the crater which has a mysterious and magical lake surrounded by cloud forests! It is a sacred lagoon to the local Mam (Maya) people in this area of San Martín Sacatepéquez, Quetzaltenango (locally known as Xela). It's a fairly difficult walk/hike up and down the mountain/stairs going down the crater, so I wouldn't recommend for any people with any sort of knee problems or health issues. Normally takes an hour from the 2nd trail head, but we managed to reach the top in half hour! Entrance fee was 50 Quetzales (which is about £5 GBP) and there are tour companies that can arrange your travels from central Xela (Quetzaltenango). If you have a car it takes an hour from Xela or tours can be arranged from tourist hot spots such as Antigua, Guatemala City and from Lake Atitlan.
