The Chiquita Lock in Cape Coral Florida is in the process of being removed. This is a video update for April 29, 2025. The lock has been inoperable since Hurricane Ian in 2022. After years of legal battles, approval was finally given to remove the lock entirely. The lock has been responsible for the death of marine life including Manatee that were trapped by the large doors and crushed in the lock. Once remove, the waterway will allow free flow of water into the canals, which has already created cleaner clearer water within Cape Coral’s extensive canal system.
