Digital badges are a great way for professionals to easily attain proof of completion for various training and certifications. Eric Guise then outlines 5 barriers for creating effective professional development for teachers in K-12 schools and districts. These barriers are Time, Interest/Relevance, Cost, Personalization, and Goal Alignment. At Hopewell Valley Central High School, Eric and his team used digital badge systems to overcome these barriers creating effective and flexible professional development for teachers. Using digital badges for teacher professional development is easy. First, teachers choose an edtech tool they want to learn about, then they show how they integrated that edtech tool into class, and as a result, they receive a digital badge of completion. Although there are paid tools to create digital badges, the Hopewell team was able to create free professional development using G-Suite tools like Google Slides, Google Forms, and Gmail, and used Drawings and Canva to create the digital badges themselves. So what do K-12 teachers get out of digital badges as free professional development? After completing the professional development exercise and receiving a digital badge, teachers should find new ways to implement that edtech tool, reflect on how they are using the tool, and gather feedback from fellow teachers and students to refine how they are using that edtech tool in the classroom.
