The Tao Tei creatures were introduced in Zhang Yimou’s The Great Wall and they have risen in popularity ever since. They also went on to inspire a prequel graphic novel whose story is set sixty years before the events of the film. The movie stars Matt Damon, Jing Tian, and Pedro Pascal but it is the beastly creatures that steal the spotlight. Set in ancient China, the film derives inspiration from one of the many legends behind the construction of the Great Wall. The creatures who crash-landed on a meteorite are believed to be a divine punishment for being greedy. The Tao Tei monsters are inspired by ancient Chinese mythology as they represent one of the four evils. They have been used in ancient Chinese culture to symbolize greed and gluttony.
