Survival, Axe or Big Knife?, Surprise Answer. The Estwing E3-R Rigger's Axe may be your best survival tool. It's always been a debate in 'survival circles': 'What is better? A small axe or a large knife in a survival situation. The Estwing E3-R Rigger's Axe has several advantages over other axes and survival tools.. One is that the Estwing E3-R Rigger's Axe is 16 3/4 inches long which is 3 inches to 5 inches longer than most small camp axes yet the The Estwing E3-R Rigger's Axe is still a lightweight axe , a compact axe (ax) and an incredibly strong ax. Since the entire axe head and axe handle is all one piece forged tool steel, it's very unlikely you'll ever break this axe even under the most demanding survival situation. This Estwing Riggers Axe and hammer is very well designed so that you won't tire as easily using this survival tool all day. The shock absorption handle is also another great feature of this axe. Since the entire axe and handle is all one piece forged tool steel, you have extremely good over-strike protection as it will be very difficult to damage or break this solid forged tool steel axe handle. The shape of this axe head (Estwing Riggers Axe) makes for an axe head that is easily as sharp as a quality large knife. Estwing axes are easy to sharpen too, plus the forged tool steel in this axe is fairly resistant to rust, but since it's still not stainless steel but rather a high quality tool carbon steel you can use your firestarter with this axe. A firestarter won't work with stainless steel, which is a serious downside of stainless steel. Another excellent feature of the Estwing Riggers axe is that it has a true hammer and a nail puller. You might not thing you'd come across used nails in a 'survival situation' but in today's modern times there is often old broken structures or items dumped deep in the woods that might have some nails. In that case the nail puller would come in extremely handy, as also a real hammer head. Another advantage of an axe with a handle that can't melt or burn in a fire, in it can be used as a small cooking surface, if you are careful. You could do this with a large knife too but an axe with a 16 3/4 inch tool steel handle would work a lot better. Another great bonus is that the Estwing Riggers Axe is Made in the USA.
