Ranchers recognize that to have a sustainable business they need adequate information about their land to adapt management practices toward improving ecological health, economic efficiency, and human well-being over time. The Range Monitoring Group in central Montana has come together to develop a format of data collection that they all agree is valuable. And importantly, a protocol with cataloging the data such that state and federal agencies agree it is being done in a way that makes the data credible. With one of the ranches, the management practices have improved the land – so much so, the Bureau of Land Management agreed to increase the number of animals run. More and more ranchers in the area are interested in the Range Monitoring Group.
