How to determine if your FTDI USB to Serial converter uses a fake (counterfeit) FTDI chip. TLDR; 1. Plug the adapter into a raspberry pi. 2. Type "grep SerialNumber /var/log/syslog" 3. Check the serial number Part 2 of this can be found here: • Fake FTDI chips in USB Serial Part 2 of 2 Fake FTDI chips have a serial number of 000000 or a serial number A50285BI (you can google that yourself). Real FTDI chips have a different serial number on every chip. Why do you care? Well, it turns out that the fake ones have problems and randomly disconnect every now and then -- see https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/.... This also happens on other systems, not just the Raspberry Pi. So, if you are trying to use this on a mobile robot, it would be bad. Very bad. Just buy the real one from DigiKey or Mouser. Yes, they cost twice as much, but hey, they at least work!! I wasted a couple of days trying to debug this, thinking there is something wrong with the Raspberry Pi raspbian OS. No one else seems to have mentioned that the dropouts could be from the fake chips. I kept trying different boards and they all kept dropping the USB connection every now and then. It was only when I ordered the REAL ones from Digikey that my problems magically went away!
