Recognizing the Tri-State area’s most talented and promising postdoctoral researchers, the Blavatnik Regional Awards named three honorees in the category of Physical Sciences & Engineering (PS&E). Meet Netta Engelhardt, PhD, a theoretical physicist that was nominated by Princeton University (now at MIT) for her groundbreaking contributions to the theoretical understanding of classical and quantum gravitational physics, who was named the 2019 Blavatnik Regional Award Winner in PS&E. Her field connects Einstein’s general theory of relativity with modern quantum information theory. 2019 Blavatnik Regional Awards Finalists in PS&E include condensed matter physicist, Matthew Yankowitz, PhD, nominated by Columbia University (now at the University of Washington) who is working in an experimental area of “Twistronics” which entails modifying a new class of materials called van der Waal materials, with applied pressure, inducing superconductivity in multi-layer graphene; and Derya Akkaynak, PhD, a mechanical engineer and oceanographer nominated by Princeton University (now at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute) who made significant breakthrough advancements in the field of computer vision and underwater imaging technologies, resolving a key technical problem—the reconstruction of lost colors and contract in underwater imagery.
