Located in the county of Kent, and around 60 miles east of Greater London, is the town of Margate. During the medieval era, Margate was brought under the control of Dover, one of the Cinque Ports (a term derived from old Norman French, pronounced 'sink ports' in the anglicised fashion) which comprised of the towns Sandwich, Dover, Romney, Hastings and Hythe (and later, Rye and Winchelsea). These towns provided naval and ferry services to the crown in return for tax exemption and other benefits. In the 15th century, Margate was added to the confederation of Cinque Ports, specifically as a limb of Dover. As such, it took a share in the burden of ship service, and a share in the privileges of the confederation. By the 16th century, Margate was a small fishing town in decline according to contemporary accounts. This began to change from around the 18th century. In 1736 a local carpenter named Thomas Barber introduced the first bathing machine to the town. Following on from the rise of spa towns in the 17th century, the concept of 'taking the waters' for health reasons was already known. Gradually, Margate became a popular destination with Georgian holidaymakers who would typically visit from London via stagecoach or, from the early 19th century, via paddle steamers. In 1824 Margate Jetty was constructed, initially from wood, then rebuilt in iron in the 1850s. In 1976 it closed over safety concerns, and was damaged in a storm two years later. Ultimately it was demolished. In 1846 the railway arrived in Margate, ushering in significant growth in the town. The station that stands today dates from 1863. It is situated on the Chatham Main Line. Trains to central London typically take just under two hours, although high speed services can reach St Pancras station in typically around 90 minutes. In 1920 Dreamland Amusement Park opened in Margate, although the site on which it stands had been used for rides since 1880. In the early 2000s the park was faced with closure. A public campaign to restore the park was launched, eventually leading to its reopening in the 2010s. In 1982 Chas & Dave released the song 'Margate', whose lyrics revolve around taking a coach trip to the town. This gained a new lease of life when, in 1989, it was featured in the eighth Christmas special episode of Only Fools and Horses. The episode was titled The Jolly Boys' Outing, and central to the plot was a trip to Margate, filmed on location.
