From Engineer to Leader: How Do You Get There? | Simplexity Product Development

Simplexity’s CEO Dorota Shortell went from mechanical design engineer to the CEO of a rapidly-growing product design company. In March of 2017 she spoke to the Columbia River Section of the Society of Women Engineers about her journey. In the talk, Shortell delves into the qualities of both a good engineer and a good leader, and outlines lessons for leadership that she has learned over the course of her career. These lessons include: 1. Communicate what you’re doing, even when you don’t have to. 2. Stick to your commitments. 3. How you present yourself can be as important as your technical skills. 4. Tell people your career goals and aspirations. 5. Ask for help. 6. Listen first to understand needs. 7. Develop ways of presenting complex data in a simple way. 8. Who you know can be more important than what you know. 9. Practice ownership thinking. 10. Sign up for new opportunities, even if you’re not 100 percent sure you can do them. 11. Your effectiveness as a leader is not defined by what you get done personally, but by what results your team achieves.
