Malcolm Arnold was an English composer whose music is associated with the ‘pastoral’ school, the style which is very commonly linked with composers such as Ralph Vaughan Williams, Fredrick Delius and Gordon Jacob, his composition teacher at the Royal College of Music. He was a very prolific composer with 132 film score, nine symphonies, seven ballets, two operas, 20 concertos, a considerable amount of chamber music, and various works for wind and brass instruments. The first movement is lyrical and peaceful, with musical ideas being passed through various units of the orchestra. Arnold shifts from this warm atmosphere and full-bodied texture to just the two clarinets, who introduce the second movement, a quasi-waltz. The clarinets’ theme evolves into a lush, lilting melody which returns in its entirety and fragments between contrasting mysterious chromatic sections. The piece reaches its climax with the militaristic final movement, featuring virtuosic fanfares and scalic accompaniments with a relentless drive of energy throughout the movement. Conductor - Leo Zagorac
