What Are Hammertoes? Hammertoe Surgery Specialists Manhattan Upper East Side Hello, I'm Dr. Suzanne Levine. I'm a practicing podiatrist right here in New York City, the Upper East Side in Manhattan. And I've been practicing for over 25 years, I've been a podiatrist, performing foot surgery just about every day. Being a specialist in foot care, it's been interesting, it's been an incredible road. We've been on so many TV programs on just about every new show over the years. It's been an exciting road. So, they're well published, and they're wonderful surgeons. All of them have been in practice for many years and are highly qualified and skilled to perform surgery, ambulatory foot surgery in particular. So, today, in discussing the hammertoe, just what is a hammertoe? A hammertoe is nothing more than a bony bump on the top of your foot. It looks like a corn and it looks like something you could just remove. In fact, they’re used to be commercials we put a drop of medication on and the corn would just come off. It could be so painful, that hammertoe. No matter what shoes you put on it, the corn and bump is painful, red, and swollen. It's generally due to a problem with the plantar plate. And it can be minimally corrected with using a floor scope with small incision and the bony bump is then flattened out and the toe is then straightened. It's done under local anesthesia, IV sedation. And we're fortunate enough to have the... an ambulatory facility so it's not done in a hospital, it's done in my office that's a Board-Certified office here in New York City. And what's amazing is you walk out and you're able to wear your shoes immediately. Many patients tell me that they wish they had done the procedure before, that they had to live with this pain and it became so unbearable that they would cut their sneakers out, they would actually cut their shoes out to address this problem, the hammertoe, or have to tie their... their bandage their toes down and wear all these corn pads. And they were so distressed every day, they just couldn't wear shoes. They had all these magnificent shoes in their closet and they were unable to wear it. So, now by actually doing this procedure, you can eliminate that problem. You can flatten the toe down, and you can straighten out. That... that issue is just it's a minimal surgery, we're looking at 20 minutes of the surgical procedure. The prep time probably is longer than the procedure.
