There are also over 2300 videos in this channel for many North, South & Central American Tribes & First Nations, Residential Schools, Chiefs, Elders, Historical Events, Indigenous Concerns, Quotes, Environmental Youth Activists.. and much more. ------------------------------------------------ "Chesterfield Inlet Federal Hostel" (a.k.a.: "Turquetil Hall Hostel/ Residence"), was opened on August 1st 1954, was closed on June 30th 1969 and was operated by the Roman Catholic Church and the Canadian Federal Government, in Chesterfield Inlet, Nunavut, Canada. The school was off the Northwest coast of Hudson’s Bay and was located on the southern coast of a small peninsula about two miles by four miles in size off the southern tip of the entrance to Chesterfield Inlet, which extends inland in a north westerly direction for over 100 miles before connecting with Baker Lake and was about 400 miles north of Churchill, Manitoba. From 1954 to 1959, Turquetil Hall was a Church-owned student residence, managed by the Roman Catholic Mission and from September 1959 to its formal closure, in June 1969, was a Government-owned, Roman Catholic Church-managed student residence. On September 3rd 1912, Father Arsène Turquetil, o.m.i. and Father Armand LeBlanc, o.m.i. arrived in Chesterfield Inlet and started construction of a mission house, 28′ x 16′, which is still standing. Construction on the student residence began in 1954. Most of the construction work was carried out by Brother Paradis of the Roman Catholic Mission and five Inuit men. "Chesterfield Inlet Federal Hostel" was also known by the following aliases (names): "Roman Catholic Mission Hostel", "St. Mary’s Residence", "Residence at Chesterfield Inlet", "Sainte-Marie Residence", "Roman Catholic (Federal) Hostel at Chesterfield Inlet" and "Turquetil Hall Hostel/ Residence". Children from 'at least" the following communities/ regions resided at Turquetil Hall: Eskimo Point, Rankin Inlet, remote parts of Chesterfield Inlet, Repulse Bay, Igloolik, Pelly Bay, Spence Bay, Gjoa Haven, Coral Harbour, Baker Lake, Eskimo Point, Cam 4, Cape Dyer, Foxe Main (Hall Beach), Arviat and Pond Inlet. The religious groups that operated during the school & mission's history were: "Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of Hudson’s Bay", "Vicariate Apostolic of Hudson’s Bay", "The Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate", "The Oblate Fathers Indian and Eskimo Welfare Commission" and "The Sisters of Charity (Grey Nuns)". Many of today’s Inuit leaders received their early education in Chesterfield Inlet. Throughout the 1950's and into the 1960's, it was the only school in the Keewatin. By 1969, there were public schools in most settlements and the hostel/residences were closed. The "Chesterfield Inlet Federal Hostel" building was torn down, in 1983. ------------------------------------------------ **** I claim no ownership of any of the photos, clips, video and music expressed in this video...and employ my borrowing of them with much respect and thanks.
