An estimated 27 million people worldwide are victims of human trafficking at any given time. Ninety percent of victims of sex trafficking are girls and women. Despite national and global efforts to end this crime, the number of victims worldwide increases every year. This event highlighted the results of a consulting partnership between Apne Aap Worldwide, among the world’s most influential anti-human trafficking organizations, and the NYU SPS Center for Global Affairs (CGA) on current trends, opportunities and challenges in the global fight against human trafficking. CGA graduate students Maria Barbu, Nidhi Jariwala, Jennifer Park, Celine Saad, and Kavya Thakkar drafted white papers about the powerful role of AI in human trafficking, anti-money laundering initiatives and suggested codes of conduct for banks, as well as an assessment of anti-trafficking initiatives in the transportation and hospitality sectors and presented their work at a UN CSW side event on March 11, 2025. CGA Professor and Academic Director Sylvia Maier, who oversaw the Practicum, moderated the event.
