Principal idol is Devi Durga worshipped as Viraja (Girija). Jajpur is also known by other names like "Viraja Kshetra" and "Biraja Peetha" because of the presence of Shaktipeeth in this region. Durga idol has two hands (dwibhuja), spearing the chest of Mahishasura with one hand and pulling his tail with the other as demon is depicted as Water Buffalo. As per Tantra Chudamani, Goddess Sati’s navel fell in the Utkala Kingdom also known as Viraja Kshetra which later became Odisha. This temple was built by "Yayati Keshari" hailing from Somavamshi Dynasty. The same king built Lingraj Shiva Temple, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha.
