Growing up a D.A.R.E. Ambassador in the South during the "Superpredator" craze, which targeted the Black community, Q Nicole Vanderhorst never guessed she would one day launch a cannabis brand in her home state of North Carolina. Especially with her own brother still serving an 8-year prison sentence for cannabis possession. But Q Nicole is a disrupter – a trait she picked up from her father. When she needed relief and didn't want to turn to prescription drugs, friends helped Q Nicole unravel the stigma surrounding the plant and she now aids her community in understanding the medical benefits of cannabis. While marijuana is still prohibited in the state of North Carolina, the Hemp Farming Act of 2018 paved the way for Q Nicole to launch a hemp-derived cannabis brand amid the COVID-19 pandemic with cannabis plants cultivated on legacy African American farms in Eastern N.C.
