Trooper Niles initiated a traffic stop on a black Lexus IS250 (ABN65C) on Highway 440 east before exit 12. On approach, Trooper Niles observed a silver pistol wedged between the center console and passenger seat. The driver was asked to produce a driver's license and stated he did not have a driver’s license. Trooper Niles had the driver write down his name and date of birth. The name Steve Adams (4-26-1990) was provided to Trooper Niles. Once the information was received, Trooper Niles requested to take possession of the firearm for safety. Mr. Adams immediately put the vehicle in drive and fled. Speeds reached 145mph on Highway 440 east to U.S. Highway 167 north. Mr. Adams drove recklessly by weaving in between motorist at speeds over 90mph. Mr. Adams exited at Redmond Road, running a stop sign before merging onto U.S. Highway 167 south. Speeds continued at 100+ mph. Mr. Adams drove on the shoulder, crossed three lanes of traffic, and showed no regard for human life while fleeing. Mr. Adams took the Wildwood exit and disregarded a traffic light at Wildwood and Warden Road. Mr. Adams continued to drive recklessly passing a school bus at the intersection of Landers and Trammel, then merged back onto U.S. Highway 167 north. Mr. Adams continued driving over 100 mph and passing on the shoulder. Trooper Niles attempted to PIT but aborted due to traffic. Mr. Adams merged onto Highway 440 west. Speeds were over 100mph. Trooper Niles successfully executed a PIT maneuver on Highway 440 westbound before exit 12. The vehicle struck the left concrete barrier wall then rolled onto its right side. Trooper Niles and Special Agent McKibben approached the vehicle and observed Mr. Adams through the windshield and sunroof laying in the passenger's front seat. Mr. Adams was advised to keep his hands outside the sunroof and visible at all times. Trooper Niles observed the pistol was lying in the front windshield with-in the suspects reach. Eventually the firearm was removed by breaking the front windshield. Trooper Niles took possession of the .40 caliber Smith & Wesson Model 4013 handgun. There were 8 rounds in the magazine and 1 round in the chamber.
