Plants can be manipulated to bloom (or not) on your schedule, and one of the most important tools is their response to the length of day: photoperiodism. Of course, light is fuel for plants - so sunshine hours are important in all areas of their health, but in this video I'll be discussing the way plants use light to make decisions: should they bulk up their foliage, store energy into their roots, flower or go dormant? For some plants, these decisions are guided by the way the length of day changes through the seasons. Growers routinely use this information to "force" plants to bloom, or to prevent premature blooming - and this knowledge can be very useful for garden hobbyists too!
