Previous Zone: Egg Rocket Zone/Cosmic Angel Zone Next Zone: The Moon Zone The jig is up for Dr. Eggman, and he retreats to the outer parts of his then-latest superweapon from space. Here in the X-Zone, Eggman has three machines ready for battle against Sonic and his friends. The first two are a piece of cake: They are the first bosses from Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 16-bit, and they take 4 hits instead of the usual 8. The first boss is the pendulum one from Green Hill Zone. Two platforms appear on each side of the screen, and Eggman reveals a big brown checkered ball that slowly swings back and forth as Eggman drives left and right. The big ball damages on contact, and you need to use the platforms in order to reach Eggman. (Unless you're using Amy, who can attack Eggman from the ground. As you can see, this is nothing, especially for Knuckles. The second boss is the car one from Emerald Hill Zone. Here, Eggman just drives back and forth on the ground with a drill on the front of the car that you shouldn't touch, which he'll launch when he's down to one hit. Very simple stuff. For both of these bosses, the boss themes from their respective games play, though using this game's chiptune set. But that's fine. Also, notice that Sonic 3 has no representation, though arguably, it may be more difficult to portray it without looking awkward. (By that, I'm referring to Angel Island Act 2's boss from that game.) It would've been pretty neat to have Sonic 3's boss theme, however, as it was my favorite among the classic series. With those two down, Eggman puts his Egg Mobile into the Egg X, which is a roulette of attacks. (We've seen Metal Sonic do roulette in Knuckles' Chaotix and Eggman try it again in Shadow the Hedgehog, so this shouldn't look too weird.) The Egg X spends much of its time protecting its cockpit from attack with its spinning ring of weapons, exposing Eggman only when it's about to attack. That's the difficulty of this boss--it's invincible when idle, and when yo can hit it, it's getting ready to hit you with one of five different attacks: 1. If there is a pipe that's perfectly horizontal, Eggman will fire a laser. Duck or roll to dodge it. 2. and 3. If the pipe is pointing upwards, Eggman will do one of two different attacks. Get to the center of the screen and be ready to look at the bomb's trajectory. If it goes mostly upwards, stay where you are to let the bomb go over you. If it goes msotly forward, jump. 4. If a hand is sticking out, get to the far end of the screen and jump as soon as the hand launches. If you get hit by this, Eggman will shake the Rings loose as he travels about, preventing you from collecting them again. This is his most dangerous attack if it hits for that reason. 5. If the wheel of weapons continues to spin, Eggman will try to ram you by moving to the other side of the screen. Jump to get out of his way, but try to hit him. The last two attacks are the safest ones to attack Eggman with. Once he launches the hand across the screen, he's helpless when he's reeling it back. And if he moves across the sceen, it means he'll be right in your attack range. If he's doing the laser or bombs, however, just go on the defensive, as Eggman pops out and back in too quickly (unless you're aiming for time). For defeating the X Egg, the Cosmic Angel apparently self-destructs with it. This is a load-bearing boss! As I'm playing as Knuckles, his story ends here and you see his ending. If you defeat him as Sonic, however, and you hav all seven Chaos Emeralds, Eggman will take the battle to the Moon, and Sonic goes Super to pursue him there.
