It is a 13-day festival celebrating emancipation from slavery on the island of Antigua. Major events include the Party Monarch and Calypso Monarch competitions, Panorama steel band competition, Parade of Bands, Miss Antigua Pageant, and Caribbean Queen's Competition. Smaller festivities include local concerts, food fairs, parades, and cultural shows. The carnival replaced the Old Time Christmas Festival in 1957 to boost tourism. The Antigua Carnival has deep historical roots dating back to the 18th century and the days of slavery. It has evolved over time, blending African, European and Caribbean influences.
