(25 May 2018) LEADIN: The simple game of foosball is getting a 21st century upgrade, thanks to a Paris-based start-up. Foosball Society has created an efoosball table that connects to players smartphones and allows them to access data and share goal replays. STORYLINE: This is no ordinary game of foosball. At Viva Technology event in Paris, start-up Foosball Society is demonstrating its Bonzini efoosball table. "What we try to do is through tech to put humans in the centre of scene," explains Jerome Boye, the CEO of Foosball Society. "Thanks to a traditional game, we are able to explain how digital transforms the experience." The table is fitted with a motion detecting-camera and sensors that record data like score and speed of the ball. "The basic is three pillars," explains Boye. "A platform that creates data, a connected table that you see here - to the platform - and players that are connected to the table and to the platform thanks to this app. "The idea is very simple, you just scan the QR code on both sides to indicate the system and which position you play." The dedicated smartphone app not only gathers data, but also allows players to establish a social network with a news feed, rankings, statistics and trophies. They can even share replays of their best goals on social media. "It is fun because people can have access to info they didn't have before," says Boye. "They can have access to a replay of their goal, they can know the speed of their ball, they can know they are better at the back, defense or attack. And they can contact other people thanks to the app." The idea is to foster a new community of foosball players and inject some 21st century tech into a simple game. "So, the idea is to recreate the need to play together and to embrace a large population of people, young and old, woman and man," says Boys. Of course, there's one thing technology can't help you with - winning. Viva Technology runs 24-26 May at Paris Expo. Now in its third year, the three-day Viva Technology event is welcoming over 8,000 start-ups and 1,400 investors.
