Takin-The Mysterious Goat-Antelope of the Himalayas The takin (Budorcas taxicolor) is a powerful, stocky herbivore native to the Himalayan mountains and surrounding regions of China, India, Bhutan, and Myanmar. With its muscular build, curved horns, and thick, oily fur, this goat-antelope hybrid is well-adapted to life in rugged, high-altitude forests and alpine meadows. Takins are agile climbers, capable of navigating steep, rocky terrain in search of leaves, grasses, and bamboo shoots. These social animals form herds and use their strong musky odor to waterproof their fur. There are four subspecies, including the rare Golden Takin, the largest Sichuan Takin, and the Bhutan Takin, Bhutan’s national animal. Thought to have inspired the legendary "golden fleece," this fascinating species remains one of Asia’s most unique and elusive mammals.
