One of the most Miused and misconstrued word in our life is the word Prarabdha. We carry a negative connotation of the Prarbdha. That’s because we always recall Prarabhda only when unpleasant things happen to us !. Very Partial we are . I think we ought to give it a fair deal . Aren’t good things also happen because of Prarabhda? In fact the meanings of Prarabhda are - उदय भाव उत्पत्ति,प्रादुर्भाव, विकास, उद्गम, आविर्भाव, उत्थान. The meaning of Utthan and Uday bhav fits in so well , then . Yet it can baffle anyone - its tenacity to stay afoot till our own existence ends. We can ward off many a challenges , however huge they are , however potent they are , like Sanchita Karma entirely . The Jnani , who is a realized soul has already burnt Sanchita Karma – but even, he has to endure Prarabhda. It Stays. Hence the only way out , is to manage it !. Let us explore this a bit , so that we manage Prarabdha – what ALL is given to us as Prarabhda ? 1.Our own Karmas and the environment. In the 6th Chapter of the BG , there is an excellent example. Bhagwan Krishna promises - as a good part of Prarabdha)- Shuchinaam sreemanthanam gehae Yogabhrustoabhijayate ….. AND the accrued Yogic achievement Tatra Tam Buddhi Samyogam Labhate Paurva Dehikam. We all know that the Mind – is a product of our Vaasanas .The Vaasannas are expressed as Gunas . These gunas rule what thoughts come to our mind and what we are likely to entertain . So if your deeds were righteous in the past births , more so in the last birth , you get the mind that is a product of those deeds. This is important because to Manage the Prarabhda , one needs to manage this mind , control it using your buddhi. In managing the Prarabdha , We have two options. Take it & TAKE IT ON . So , the first one is to accept it gracefully . But then what does take it ON mean ?. Using our Will , post sustained efforts we can employ our Purushartha. ”Why put effort if I am going to get what is destined”. Taking that stand takes us to doom,for certainty. That stand is taken on account of past failures ! We can take that stand provided we know we are going to fail again as always. How can we say that ? Do we KNOW what is in our Prarabhda? Thankfully we don’t ! Then let us believe we are destined for better things in future and employ our Purushartha. Managing Prarabhda means mitigating the Prarabhda . Here now we take the other Option – accepting it gracefully . However , this is not easy at all , especially when the going is not good . The Mind alone can rescue us here. Titiksha is one of the Values we have learnt as part of Shat Sampati under Sadhana Chatushtayam …. Sahanam Sarva Dukhanam Aprtikaara pUrvakam – The Pathway - Samatvam - SheetOshna , SukhaDukha , JayaAjayo : Samatvam – Equanimity -The Bhagagavan asserts Samatvam Yoga Uchyate. This Yog helps us in Practising Titiksha . Titiksha is practiced to Mitigate the negative aspects of Prarbdha. But how do we Develop , Titiksha , the forbearance? - through Bhakti - Devotion , and Vijnanam - the application of the knowledge derived from the scriptures . How does one develop this great Yog ? Equanimity means one should Accept the Dvand - both aspects of the pair of opposites Equally …. With a similar state of mind . Krishna gives us a practical way to acheive equanimity . He says , in the Second chapter of the Gita , Dukheshu anudvigna Manah , Sukhshu Vigathaspruhah . Do not react , but respond mildly to both good and bad situations or outcomes. As Sw Chinmayananda said , Sublimate your emotions by responding appropriately. He explains , appropriately means with caution and without excitement. A controlled response helps us treat both situations with equal intensity and not reacting in extreme manner. Only then one one gains strength apply equanimity .Hence it is absolutely necessary to respond equally and with a little restrain to the ups and downs of life. Devotion : “He has given it and he will give me the strength to bear it”. – Called ANANYA BHAKTI Jnanam : (i) Papa Kshayam / (ii) Not having Dehaabhimaan – at least attempt to ward off Dehabhimaanam (ii) It is just that you do not suffer ! you endure it ,on account of having discarded body consciousnes Mitigation also by seeking good environment / company , doing good things and most importantly feeling good.-the idea of Contrary thoughts!. Like Bringing pleasant thoughts when we face difficulties . In the Yog Darshan , Patanjali Maharishi Said - “Vitarka-baadhane pratipakṣa-bhaavanam”
