Centenary Park: A History Early Origins: Before 1953, the area was known as "Central Park." In 1953, it was renamed Centenary Park to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Cecil John Rhodes' birth. This commemoration included events opened by the Queen Mother in July 1953. Golden Era: Centenary Park became a beloved recreational space for Bulawayo residents and visitors alike. It was renowned for its attractions, including: A large ornamental fountain. A miniature railway. An aviary. Botanical gardens. A boating pool. The Natural history museum. The Natural History Museum: The National Museum of Rhodesia, now the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe, found its home within Centenary Park in 1960. The museum's iconic round building opened in 1964, housing extensive natural history collections. Changes Over Time: Like many public spaces, Centenary Park has faced challenges in recent years. Factors such as economic difficulties have impacted the park's maintenance. There have been reports of deterioration of some of the parks features, such as the miniature railway, and the fountain. There have also been reports of increases in littering, and homeless populations within the park. Ongoing Efforts: The City of Bulawayo is working to revitalize the park, with efforts including borehole drilling to supplement water supplies and seeking corporate support for restoration projects. There are also talks of "Friends of Centenary and Central Parks" being created, to help with restoration. Historical Significance: Despite its current challenges, Centenary Park remains an important historical landmark in Bulawayo, reflecting the city's past and present.
