Rectal prolapse Rectal prolapse means protrusion of the rectum through the anus. The rectum comes out of the anis. what is the RECTUM? The rectum is the terminal part of the large intestine. It is the reservoir for stools and helps in evacuating the stools when the anal muscles relax. ANAL CANAL: the anal canal is below the rectum and is surrounded by muscles called sphincters which control the defecation process. PROLAPSE: Prolapse means some thing dropping down/ coming out. WHY PROLAPSE HAPPENS? Loss of rectal supports due to chronic straining, multiple pregnancies or due to aging, rectal prolapse may happen WHAT AGE GROUP IS AFFECTED? More common in elderly women. But also seen in all other age groups, young males and females, children also. MUCOSAL PROLAPSE: Young children have mucosal prolapse. Here, only the inner most layers of the rectum come out. FULL THICKNESS PROLAPSE: All the layers of the rectum come out, almost circumferrentially SYMPTOMS: feeling of something coming out when you pass stools. Generally the prolapsing rectum may go inside on itself or you may have to push it inside. bleeding pain associated constipation incontinence in some patients. Incontinence is partial or complete loss of control on the passage of stools or faltus, COMPLICATIONS: Strangulation/ Gangrene of the prolapse: In some patients the rectum may suddenly prolapse and it may be a big prolapse and may not reduce. The rectum will become swollen, red and start to bleed. The anal muscles may go into spasm and the rectum may lose its blood supply and this may undergo gangrene and the patient may become sick requiring emergency surgery.
