Initially rolled out in 1987, the Ruger Mini-30 is the 7.62x39mm caliber version joining the Mini-14 in Ruger’s sporting semi-automatic rifle lineup. The first Mini-30 at the Barracks was a 189 series rifle purchased in 1990. It didn’t have a long stay, as it could not shoot steel cased ammunition without failure to fire and failure to eject case stoppages and I had a large stash of that 7.62x39mm I had gotten for a Chinese SKS at the time. I also thought the rifle had a wandering zero problem, no matter how much I adjusted the rifle, it always seemed to shoot a round or two out to left field somewhere on the target. I was expecting a little more from this new rifle than that…not much more…but a little more. Roll forward 17 years later, I heard that Ruger was marketing a new improved Mini-30 and I went and bought the 581 series rifle in this video in 2007. That was a step in the right direction with a reunion with the Mini-30, but the rifle remained in the box unfired until about a dozen years later. I’ve only taken it to range a couple of times since then, so it is virtually new. Despite its non-use, there are many small features out of the factory on this rifle, some enumerated in the video, that added up to make it a fine rifle. I seem to appreciate this rifle much better after examination and shooting it. Well made, handy and constructed of materials which can hold up under outdoor use, what else can I give but a thumbs up for it here at the Barracks.
