Every year, thousands of Nigerians risk their lives in search of better opportunities abroad. But many end up stranded, trafficked, or facing unimaginable hardships along the way. In 2025 alone, over 70,000 irregular migrants have been repatriated to Nigeria under the International Organization for Migration (IOM) programs. About 27,000 of them have been successfully reintegrated through the AVRR scheme. However, the routes they take – through the Sahel, across the Mediterranean, and via Libya – are fraught with dangers: abuse, detention, human trafficking, and death.
