Youngster Matt Read heads the entry for the 500cc Solo's at Wimborne's June 6th meeting from 1999, but he's got plenty of stiff competition in the form of another youngster, Paul Knott, and the former World Speedway finalist Malcolm Simmons, and although Malcolm is now in his 50's, he can still mix it with the best of them. Others who were also in the mix were Mark Giles, Dave Rumsey, Paul Smith, Chris Tritton, and Mark Dimmer. The 350cc class saw Terry Giles going great guns, but Barry Powell would emerge as his biggest threat, getting faster with each ride. South East superstar Lee Street looked the man to beat in the 250cc Solo class, but first season debutant Ashley Denham was absolutely flying and would give Street plenty to think about, but could he possibly pull off the win? Keith Strudwick and great rival of Street and Steve Mander would also have something to say about who would take the win in the class. Gary Lloyd/Dave Higgins, Mike Read/Mark Thorpe, Chris Salisbury/Gary Hughes, Ricky Naele/Tim Phillips, Trevor & Ronnie Steward were all in the mix, and all had some terrific battles through the heats in the 500cc Sidecar class, but which crew would take the final? In a wide open looking 1000cc RH Sidecar class, there looked to be many crews in with a shout at taking the win, as there were lots of different winners through the heats. Ivor Matthews/Simon Wall, Richard Thomas/Kevin Woodley, Kenny Hammill/John Richards, Russell Ing/Graham Ashby, Duncan Tolhurst/Colin Hill, Mark Edwards/Myles Simmons, Mick Turrell/Tony Baseby, Shaun Conway-Baker/Shane Woodley, Matt Fumarola/Andi Wilson, and John Hiscock/Jason Gill all had some great results through some terrific heats, but who would come out on top in the final at the end of the day? Absolutely terrific racing from the 1000cc RH Sidecars all through the day, in what was a brilliant meeting.
