The Gulenist cult is said to have four pillars: (1) media, (2) education, (3) business, and (4) civil society. Following its formative years, the cult first began publishing in the media.By the time of the release of the daily newspaper Zaman in 1986, propaganda activities gained momentum. Zaman was little more than a mouthpiece of the Gulenist cult. Apart from Zaman, dozens of other dailies and magazines were used for the cult’s manipulation operations. The Gulenist cult also aimed to be influential in TV and radio throughout the 1990s, establishing Samanyolu TV, Mehtap TV, Ebru TV, and Burç FM. Propaganda activities became one of the main focuses of the Gulenist cult in order to expand its sphere of influence. In this manner, a media empire was formed. Gulen’s followers established three news agencies, 16 TV channels, 23 radio stations, 45 newspapers, 15 magazines, and 79 publishing houses around the world. Second, Gulen’s followers run about 3,200 schools (primary, secondary, and high schools) and 25 universities in more than 150 countries, some of which have been shut down. In the United States,[1] the Gulenist cult operates 136 charter schools in 28 states, and has received more than $3 billion in U.S. taxpayer dollars since 2010. Gulen-affiliated charter schools in four states in the U.S. are under FBI investigation. However, the FBI does not comment on ongoing investigations. They reportedly concern improper business practices by the charter school chains, the largest of their kind in the country. According to former teachers at these schools, Gulen’s followers take advantage of the American charter school system to finance the cult.
