Poland's cement industry may go extinct by 2034 | The Bottom Line

The cement industry in Europe is facing a range of challenges. Companies have been battered by high energy prices and environmental rules, with CO2 allowances emerging as the biggest threat in the coming years. The industry would want to lower its emissions, however, there’s a problem: there in no legal means in Poland to enable the pumping of carbon dioxide from plants to underground storage sites. And because designing and building a dedicated facility (often called a CCS site) requires at least 8 years, the 2034 deadline – when there will no longer be free allowances around, so the industry will have to bear the full brunt of CO2 emissions – means that the action has to be taken now.
