In 2016, Palace House, the last remaining element of King Charles II’s Newmarket racing palace, will open its doors to the public as the new National Heritage Centre for Horseracing and Sporting Art. Building work started in January 2014 — development is well underway and the site is due to be opened in early 2016. The project has three main elements: A NEW NATIONAL HORSERACING MUSEUM The Trainer’s House and King’s Yard are being restored and adapted to enable the Museum to provide dedicated education and seminar rooms and to display its superb collections to best effect. Interactive displays and the latest audiovisual technology will convey the drama and excitement of the sport. THE FRED PACKARD MUSEUM AND GALLERIES OF BRITISH SPORTING ART Palace House will house the British Sporting Art Trust’s collections and sporting art of national importance from private and public collections including Tate Britain. This will be an important centre for the display, research and scholarship of sporting art. HORSES AT CLOSE QUARTERS The Rothschild Yard is being adapted and restored as an equine attraction, providing a flagship home for the Retraining of Racehorses charity. A number of boxes will be occupied by popular retired equine heroes. There will also be a working farrier, an equestrian horsewalker and an arena for events and demonstrations.
