Philosophy professor David Schmidtz explores the basic liberal idea of equality, and its historical significance. The ideals stated in the U.S. Declaration of Independence, declaring that "all men are created equal," refute the notion of a hierarchal society based on privileged aristocratic classes or castes. In liberal societies we believe in equal treatment for all under the law, and that our differences should have no effect on our status as equal citizens. But at the same time, liberal equality is complex. What liberalism stresses is the importance of equality of opportunity and a level playing field for all. This video is part of a series about basic philosophical questions on the subject of equality, and is also part of a larger series on foundational topics in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE).
