"FANTASMA" was captured in the Spanish Grant Neighborhood on Galveston's west end. This was not an overnight project. Traps and Game Cameras were set on December 16th and she was not captured until 24 days later on January 9th. For 24 days game cameras revealed the rich wildlife thriving in this area. Proved that our fancy coyotes were indeed frequenting the area and showed that this was indeed a bountiful hunting ground for small mammals. On the morning of January 9th the trap looked back. Fantasma was removed from the trap and transported to the shelter where she was weighed, measured and fitted with GPS Collar #89926. Hair, Whiskers, Blood and Feces were collected for ongoing genetic research. With this process (alien abduction) completed she was transported back to her neighborhood and she was released into the Artist Boat's Coastal Heritage Preserve. Fantasma and her pack are lucky indeed. as one of the few with precious territory that is protected. The samples will further genetic research. Her GPS Collar will help to paint a picture of how she uses the habitat in her territory as well as clearly defining where her territory boundaries actually sit. This information helps to not only inform more comprehensive management strategies but also can help to influence conservation efforts. Curious to know more? Hoping to help the cause? Well, the research does cost money and so does land acquisition. If you are financially able and so inclined, you can donate at both sites below. These GPS collars were purchased using grant money and we are hoping to purchase more. The game cameras used for this project were purchased with funds from Galveston Island Residents who purchased a Ghost Wolf T-Shirt or made a donation through the Guld Coast Canine Project. These tools enable greater public education and scientific understanding. The protected land provides a space for education and a safe habitat for not only these animals but so many more to thrive.
