Stop the Killings

[Video in partnership with KMP] A farmer is killed every four days in the Philippines. Since President Duterte took power in July 2016, there have been 265 documented killings of peasants, farmworkers, and fisherfolk related to land dispute cases and agrarian reform advocacy. 265 farmers have been killed between July 2016 - August 2020. In the Philippines, 75% of the population lives in rural areas, yet 90% of farmers don’t own the land they till. Today, farmers are leading local mass struggles against land grabbing, feudal policies and corporate control of land. In an effort to silence the peasant movements, Duterte’s authoritarian regime is killing farmers & human rights activists. Farming is a life-and-death political struggle. Peasants have been red-tagged (a propaganda tactic of labeling individuals as “communists” or “terrorists” that is directed towards individuals and organizations critical of the Philippine government, regardless of their actual beliefs or affiliations), which often follows with them being gunned down, often in broad daylight and with total impunity.
