Joseph Fagan, West Orange township historian, reviews the history and shares old and modern photos of the trolley line that began at South Orange Avenue and initially extended to Tremont Avenue in Orange then continued to the Main Street railroad station in West Orange. Colloquially known as the “Swamp Line” in South Orange because it ran along the swampy East Branch of the Rahway River, it was called “Crosslots” by West Orange residents because it crossed many housing lot lines, literally running through back yards. The trolley line had several official names. Organized as the South Orange and Maplewood Street Railway on August 17, 1894, it began operations on October 12, 1895, running from South Orange Avenue, west of the railroad tracks, to Tremont Avenue. In 1897 it changed name to the South Orange and Maplewood Traction Company and extended service to Main Street, West Orange, on November 10, 1897. On October 1, 1903, it was leased to the North Jersey Railway Corporation and operated by Public Service Corporation. The name was changed to Montrose Line on January 3, 1916. As noted on the Swamp Line Trolley historical marker near Floods Hill, on July 31, 1927 a sudden storm caused the river to overflow its banks and washed the traction car off its tracks. The trolley officially ceased operations on August 2, 1927. Despite its name, the trolley never extended into Maplewood. This January 13, 2022 presentation was organized by the South Orange Historical & Preservation Society.
