NGTE Pyestock [National Gas Turbine Establishment] – For over 50 years, was the prime site in the UK for the design and development of gas turbine and jet engines. It was here that Concorde engines were tested, as well as Harrier and Tornado fighter aircraft. Over the years, technology has changed and when it became possible to design and test on computers, Pyestock slowly fell into oblivion. The site was finally closed in 2000. In May 2021, when we visited this facility, there was only 1 building left, it was an anechoic chamber where the noise level of jet engines was tested. Starting the jet engines inside the building required fire resistance, resulting in the accumulation of a huge amount of asbestos. The enormous costs of asbestos disposal and demolition of the building were probably the reason why it was last in line for demolition. The building was finally demolished in the second quarter of this year (2022). In this sad way, over 50 years of history of the research and development site in which 1,600 people worked at its peak came to an end.
