(21 May 1996) Natural Sound Bosnian Serb military chief Ratko Mladic defied both Serbia's powerful president and the international community that is clamoring for his arrest on suspected war crimes to attend the funeral of a fellow suspect Tuesday. Mladic joined several thousand mourners at the funeral of Bosnian Serb General, Djorde Djukic. Mourners gathered at this Belgrade cemetery to pay their respects to Djorde Djukic, who was a General in the Bosnian Serb army. Among those present was Ratko Mladic, the Commander General of the Bosnian Serb Army who has been indicted for war crimes by the Hague. The several thousand people also included army Colonel Veselin Sljivancanin, who is another war crimes suspect. Sljivancanin can be seen here in a polo shirt, walking next to General Mladic. Djorde Djukic was Mladic's logistical specialist who died in Belgrade military hospital late on Saturday. He was also charged with crimes against humanity by the Hague, but he was freed by the international tribunal as his cancer was so bad he did not have long to live. It was not clear how Mladic arrived from Bosnia on Tuesday or whether the NATO-led force spotted him on the way to Serbia's capital. If he traveled by car he had to pass at least one international checkpoint. The unhindered presence in Belgrade of Mladic and Sljivancanin was also a clear sign that Serbia's powerful president, Slobodan Milosevic, who signed the Bosnian peace plan and pledged cooperation with the Hague tribunal, does not intend to arrest and extradite the suspects. The two indicted Bosnian Serb officers came to Belgrade a day after Milosevic received Carl Bildt, the chief peace coordinator in Bosnia, who is believed to have urged him again to help track down and extradite war crimes suspects. Milosevic has been under immense international pressure to hand over Mladic, Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and three Yugoslav army officers, including Sljivancanin.
