In this week’s episode we uncover some of the most common offending weeds that attack during winter and share what you can do to help bring them to justice. This is Winter Weeds Watch Winter Grass Winter Grass is a tufted grass weed with triangular shaped seed heads. If you allow Winter Grass to drop its seeds, next winter it will attack again, twice as badly as the previous year. While Winter Grass is a notorious winter weed, it can be removed very easily by hand as it doesn’t have particularly deep roots and it doesn’t have runners. Using a combination of a pre-emergent like Oxafert and a selective Winter Grass control like Winter Grass Killer over repeated seasons should ensure Winter Grass is eradicated from your lawn. https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au... https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au... Some Winter Grass herbicides should be avoided on Kikuyu and fescue lawns, so make sure you check the label before applying. Bindii Bindii is a low growing weed with a flower at its centre that grows in winter. At maturity, the flower produces a prickly seed pod throughout the warmer months, causing carnage for innocent lawn users. The best time to put a stop to Bindii is in winter while it is juvenile before it gets really bad, producing its seed pod and spreading throughout your lawn. Bindii can be managed by hand or by applying a selective broadleaf herbicide like Bin-Die or Lawn Solutions Australia All Purpose Weed Control. A repeat application may be required to get Bindii to cooperate. https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au... https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au... Annual Ryegrass Annual Ryegrass is a seeded grass weed that germinates in autumn and winter. Ryegrass can be difficult to control in turf during the cooler months, but it will disappear once you bring the heat of summer. You may be able to apprehend Ryegrass with a commercially available herbicide like Tribute, Monument, Duke, or Destiny. These herbicides should be applied by licensed enforcement, so contact your local lawn maintenance contractor for application. https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au... https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au... Cudweed Cudweed is a winter annual weed that forms in rosettes. The leaves are a glossy light green on top and have a white furry underside. Cudweed is very tough to control because of how quickly it spreads over lawns and if left untreated can quickly terrorize entire areas of lawn. For treatment, it’s best to remove the cudweed by hand or with a selective herbicide such as All-Purpose Weed Control. The glossiness of the leaves helps in its resistance to herbicides, but you can add a surfactant to the herbicide mix to help the charges stick. https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au... Creeping Oxalis Creeping Oxalis has small light green heart-shaped leaves, very similar in appearance to clover. Oxalis, have heart shaped leaves while clover has oval shaped leaves. The flowers are small, about 3-4mm in diameter and bright yellow in colour. But don’t let the flowers or heart shape fool you, Creeping Oxalis is a creep. It moves along the surface of the soil and produces a network of roots from the leaf as it goes. Once again, a selective herbicide such as Lawn Solutions Australia All Purpose Weed Control will help to eradicate Creeping Oxalis in most lawn types, keeping your lawn safe from further infiltration. https://lawnsolutionsaustralia.com.au... It’s very important that you target these weeds as early as possible before seeds are spread. If you don’t, your lawn is at risk of becoming a haven for these rogues and your grass could be gradually overpowered.
