Belize marked the start of construction of a new police sub-station in Bella Vista Village, a project described by Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries Kareem Musa as the first in a wave of infrastructure investments aimed at strengthening policing across the country. The facility will serve Bella Vista and surrounding southern communities, improving security presence and response capabilities in the region. Minister Musa said the Bella Vista project precedes additional police station developments planned for Caye Caulker, San Narciso and Santa Elena, noting that the contract for the San Narciso station was signed on October 20. The foundation of the sub-station incorporates discarded and damaged firearm parts, recovered during firearm destruction exercises over the past three years and stored until a safe disposal mechanism could be implemented. Embedding the components into the foundation aligns with regional security roadmaps in the Caribbean and Central America, which recommend permanent destruction of illicit weapon parts to prevent reuse or trafficking. The Firearms and Ammunition Control Board (FACB) said embedding the parts into the structure symbolizes the transformation of instruments of violence into a foundation for public safety. The placement of the firearm fragments into the foundation was witnessed by Magistrate Mannon Dennison, who represents the magistracy on the FACB. Minister Musa said the initiative reflects Belize’s broader efforts to modernise police infrastructure and reinforce national strategies to curb gun-related crime.
