We’ve all struggled with feelings of anger, hurt, regret, shame. But these feelings don’t have to consume you. In Reconciliation, Vietnamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh talks about ways you can work through your suffering. This book review addresses how compassion and empathy can help you find forgiveness for yourself and to extend that forgiveness also to anyone who has hurt you. I’ll discuss ways to come to terms with pain and how to truly move on by healing your “inner child.” Much like a child doesn’t know how to cope with pain, Hanh says that we all have a small kid inside of us. Once we acknowledge her and comfort her properly, we can form “positive habit energy” and devote time each and every day to working through our emotions. This isn’t going to be easy. Much like Buddhism, it will be a daily practice. But once you realize that everyone involved is likely hurting in their own way, empathize with their pains and hold onto kindness and compassion, you will see why the child in them acted the way they did. This allows you to put yourself in their shoes, understand their motives and forgive them for leading with fear. We have to the power to transform our suffering from the negative events of the past into a learning experience for the future.
