Israel kills Palestinian journalist Hossam Shabat in a direct strike

Hossam Shabat, a prominent 23-year-old journalist in Gaza, was killed in a direct Israeli strike earlier on Monday. Hossam spent 17 months documenting Israel’s war on Gaza and just hours after reporting on the killing of fellow journalist Mohammed Mansour, Israel targeted the press vehicle he was in. Hossam was loved and respected by people in Gaza and around the world. His team posted a message from him on his social media pages: “If you’re reading this, it means I have been killed - most likely targeted - by the Israeli occupation forces. When this all began, I was only 21 years old - a college student with dreams like anyone else”. “I fulfilled my duty as a journalist. I risked everything to report the truth, and now, I am finally at rest - something I haven’t known in the past 18 months,” the post added. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) condemned the killing of Shabat and Mansour and called for an independent investigation into whether they were deliberately targeted.
