Akka Mahadevi - Saint, Mystic and a Poet was an extraordinary personality belonging to the 12th century. She is a cult figure in the Lingayat Shaiva community of Karnataka. She was born in Shimoga district of Karnataka in the year 1130 and lived till 1160. During her lifetime, she actively participated in religious congregations, wrote many Vachanas or poems in praise of Lord Shiva, whom she worshipped immensely. After renouncing social life, she came to Nallamala Forest and settled in the million year old caves right next to the river Krishna. She worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of Lingam deep inside the cave. After our visit to this cave, we were awestruck with the choice of Akka Mahadevi to lead a spiritual life in this remote caves and jungle. It wouldn't be possible for ordinary mortals to live and survive in a forest that is inhabited by tigers, leopards, bears and reptiles. Excepting for one point inside the cave, the entire path leading to the place of worship where Akka Mahadevi prayed (did her Japam or penance) is incredibly low at few points while being very narrow at few other places. Especially, the 10 feet passage near the sanctum sanctorum, you have to walk sideways only. As you come to face to face with the Lingam, it allows you to face it by standing normally. That is the greatness of this cave and place of worship. If tourists have to crouch and walk at one point due to the low ceiling (3 feet high) at another point you have to literally crawl like a baby. This is the incredible Akka Mahadevi Caves for you that is 10 lakh (Million) years old. These caves have one unique point. The entrance of the caves have a naturally formed rock arch which has the distinction of being the longest Arch in the country. It is very attractive, awesome and majestic.
