Understanding Prop Walk: Mastering Your Boat's Maneuverability (Day 55)

Day 55 of one boating tip a day! Your propellers are designed to push water backward and propel you forward, but they also push water sideways because they spin, and that water that’s being pushed sideways pushes you sideways, and it’s felt when there’s not a lot of water flow over the hull, rudder, and keel, just like when you’re slow maneuvering or going from forward to backward and vice versa. On twin rudder boats, you’ll feel this stronger in both directions (back -forward and forward - back), but on single rudder boats where the rudder is behind the prop, only when you engage in reverse because when going forward you’re washing your rudder with water, and this phenomenon got the name PROP WALK. To understand where your stern is going to kick, you can do a little dock test (if there’s no lines or hazards), just kick the boat in reverse and see where water is coming out. If it comes from the right side, it means that in reverse your prop is pushing water to the right side and the water will push your stern to the left.
