Told you’re intentionally homeless? This could block your housing assistance. Being found intentionally homeless means the council believes you caused your homelessness on purpose and if that happens, they don’t have to help you with housing. This can happen if: You refused to pay your rent, even though you were receiving enough benefits to cover it. You were evicted for anti-social behaviour, for example, repeatedly playing loud music and disturbing your neighbours. Or you didn’t stick to your responsibilities as a tenant, like ignoring warnings or damaging the property. Here’s a real-life example: A mother of two was receiving full housing benefit. But she chose not to pay her rent for months. Her landlord took her to court and evicted her under s8 of the Housing Act 1988. When she went to the council for help, they found her intentionally homeless. She didn’t get help with emergency housing or long-term accommodation. Don’t let this happen to you. If you’re behind on your rent, speak to your housing officer now. There may still be time to fix things before it’s too late. Worried about your housing situation? Ask your questions in the comments or speak to your housing officer today.
