Recorded July 14, 2022 A growing number of communities are using road diets to make neighborhoods more walkable, to create complete streets, and to slow down traffic as part of other streetscape and revitalization projects. Dan Burden, Director of Innovation and Inspiration for Blue Zones LLC, returned to Join the Maryland Department of Planning and the Smart Growth Network to examine the essential design features of road diets, as well as how to design and operate them for walking, bicycling, driving, and freight and emergency response movement, illustrating what works best and why. The presentation followed Burden’s recent Smart Growth Network webinar on roundabouts. Burden coined the term “road diet” in 1996 and has been involved in popularizing and implementing the concept across the country since then.
