Fifty years ago – yes 50 – Jack Nicholson was escorted into an Oregon mental health facility, portraying a rebellious character named R.P McMurphy in Lawrence Hauben and Bo Goldman’s excellent Academy Award-winning adaptation of the Ken Kesey novel “One Flew Over Cuckoo’s Nest.” Portraying one of the patients watching his arrival – young Billy Bibbit was acting newcomer Brad Dourif, and to celebrate that 50th Anniversary, Brad is my guest this week on Steven Jay Rubin’s Saturday Night at the Movies. Together, we remember some of the behind-the-scenes high points of that magnificent film that snatched the Best Picture Oscar that year, a Best Actor win for Nicholson, a Best Actress Oscar for Louise Fletcher, a Best Director Oscar for Milos Forman, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for Brad. I also took a few moments to ask Brad some questions about his role as the insidious Grima Wormtongue in the “Lord of the Rings” films.
