Understanding Alcohol and Other Drugs Use In Australia

Workers from DEN were invited to take part in a forum with women from diverse cultural backgrounds. The forum was called 'Hear Our Voices' and it was offered for women and their families to understand some of the issues that were happening for them and the issues that needed attention. One big issue identified was the lack of knowledge about alcohol and other drugs. The request was to provide basic information about drugs, what are the effects of drugs, which drugs are legal and illegal in Australia, what do they need to know about the use of drugs in the workplace an how can they communicate that information with people in their family. A series of animated videos were created to address this which were developed in partnership with a number of bicultural health workers who provide the narration in four other languages: Nepali, Farsi, Tigrinya and Arabic. It's a great resource for bicultural health workers to share in their communities or you may know people who have recently arrived to Australia so they can access this information for themselves and their families. We've received recognition from the industry for this resource, winning the runners up award at the Australian Drug Foundation awards, Education category in 2019.
