I'm kind of surprised we got a Maximus Cup for Pikmin 4 and not The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. I stand by my hypothesis that other parties contact Arika to make a Maximus Cup based on something, and Tetris 99 having been around for four years at this point, there is lessened interest in them except from HAL Laboratory, though there is still a focused interest in making themes based on franchises not yet covered in Tetris 99. (Advance Wars 1+2 was likely skipped over because of it being a very minor franchise and requiring clearance from WayForward.) The 34th Maximus Cup is themed around Pikmin 4, whose release is about two weeks after this event. Hence, while I have limited knowledge about the series, my knowledge would be REALLY limited compared to what is publicly known once the game comes out. In Pikmin 4, voyagers to the dangerous planet PNF-404 lose communications with their home planets. A rescue crew is sent there, only for them to be lost too. This time, you customize your character, who goes there alone to find out what is going on. The playfield itself is based on a holographic terminal, which I know the space explorers in Pikmin have the technology for. The Tetriminos themselves have Pikmin faces, except for L-blocks, which have Oatchi faces. The S-, O-, and J-blocks carry the faces of the classic Red (Fire), Yellow (Electric), and Blue (Water) Pikmin. T-blocks have faces of the hefty Purple Pikmin. Two block types are based on new Pikmin: I-blocks are based on Ice Pikmin, and Z-blocks are based on Glow Pikmin. Garbage Blocks don't have faces, but their appearances are similar to the Rock Pikmin. The crosshairs have a unique design, but I don't know what it corresponds to. KOed players are represented by Pikmin Souls, the ghostly wisps that float upward any time a Pikmin is killed. The ones of players you've personally KOed will be larger and glow brighter. Any time you clear something greater than a single, Pikmin cheering noises will play. T-Spins and Tetrises both generate group cheers, though they're slightly different in tone. The cheering will play even if you make a T-Spin without clearing anything. (Tetris 99 refrains from having any spoken dialogue during gameplay, I noticed.) Incomplete Badges appear as Pikmin seeds, followed by Pikmin leaves and Pikmin buds, while completed Badges appear as Pikmin flowers. As the game isn't out yet, and I haven't played the demo, I can't tell you what any of the music is based on. The background of this skin, overall, is the splash art for Pikmin 4, minus the logo. As usual, included in this video is a match where I take 1st place. That will be the third and last one, the Invictus match I have here. I always strive for a 1st place victory, because the ending jingles and music will be different, and I know not everyone can accomplish that, so I want to show what it looks and sounds like. Match #1 Skin: Special Theme 26 (Pikmin 4) Mode: Normal You'll see I was making a lot of mistakes. I attribute this to me being pretty sleepy and low on my energy reserves. I don't know why I was more tired than I would be on other Thursday nights, just that I felt that way, and my coordination was off. Nevertheless, the instincts that I developed playing this and other Tetris games pulled me into the top 10, so you'll at least see all of that. Match #2 Skin: Special Theme 26 (Pikmin 4) Mode: Normal As you can see, I have been playing these matches to experiment integrating T-Spins into my normal style. I have found that T-Spins are not very conducive to reducing the height of your stack (an important skill to have in Tetris 99, where your focus is on survival and because the highest gravity won't let you put blocks where you want if you're doing a T-Spin setup), nor are they very conducive to starting a combo nor continuing a combo, which I find are far more valuable than T-Spins. T-Spins won't help you out of a situation where your Garbage Blocks are stacked high, nor have I been able to get a combo any higher than 6 with a T-Spin involved. (This is the match where I got enough points to unlock the theme for use after this event, by the way.) Match #3 Skin: Special Theme 26 (Pikmin 4) Mode: Invictus This actually took me longer than I had expected to get. During a Maximus Cup, either I get a 1st place finish within the first two hours, or I don't get one at all, with me rarely pulling one off deep into a Maximus Cup event. There were 40 human players this time, with the rest filled by computer players; that's a much larger than normal amount (I normally see 18 to 25 players), so the rooms are more hardcore than normal. Not sure why this is the case, especially since there's a big event going on next door with regular Tetris 99, but it did make it very tough. At 4 KOs, this is the lowest amount of KOs I've ever had while still taking 1st place.
