Let It Be was written by Paul McCartney, with credit also given to John Lennon. There are at least a couple stories about Paul’s inspiration for this song. One is that it was inspired by a dream he had about his mother, who had died 14 years earlier. The other comes from a friend of his that said it came from a meditation session he experienced while in India. And there were a couple versions released in 1970. One produced by George Martin, the other by Phil Specter. The Martin version is softer and understated with less orchestration. The Specter is louder, harder guitar solos and much more orchestration. The single was the Martin version and hit number one. The other version was in the Let It Be album. It was the last Beatles album and the last single before Paul announced he was leaving the band. It’s the only Beatles song that has Linda McCartney on backup vocals.
