Most people into retro video games are aware of the Mega Drive/Genesis but may not have seen or heard of the Pico from Sega, a laptop-like Mega Drive/Genesis based console designed for those aged 2 to 8. It was released in Japan in 1993 and in 1994 outside Japan and featured a pen that could interact with a drawing area on the console as well as the 'story book' cartridge games which were opened up like a book with each page turn changing what was seen on screen. Some 300 games were produced for the Pico including many licensed games; everything from Mickey Mouse to Lion King, and even Pokemon! The Pico performed best in Japan and when it was discontinued in 2005 it was replaced with the Advanced Pico 'Beena', Sega's actual last game console (but of course not having as wide appeal as the Dreamcast). Check out this video for an introduction to the PAL version of an original Pico, a look at some of its games including a 'live' interactive demonstration, and a teardown showing the Pico's internals.
